As the European Commission gears up to regulate social media platforms with the Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act (DSA, DMA); concrete knowledge is necessary to understand the the design of these platforms work, and their implications. This project, conducted with Dutch digital rights advocacy group Bits of Freedom, examines the different forms of content manipulation on the three major social media platforms in the Netherlands. As Research Lead, I authored a a white paper that reports on patterns of content manipulation on these platforms, but synthesizes these findings into a format to support Bits of Freedom’s advocacy work within the Netherlands and European Union, as well as into a tool to educate the general public.

The white paper can be accessed here [EN].
